There are few life experiences as traumatic or strenuous as coping with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in one's child. Fathers of children diagnosed with cancer must manage strong feelings of anxiety and helplessness, while simultaneously facing added responsibilities and financial burdens that accompany caring for a child with a severe chronic illness. The stress associated with having an ill child often results in depression or chronic anxiety. The well-being of fathers directly relates to the health and well-being of their families. If fathers of children with cancer are feeling distressed, this can lead to interference with family functioning as well as poor support for the ill child.
