"Knowledge is Power." -- Francis Bacon
For many people, a cancer diagnosis is accompanied by an overwhelming
world of medical terminology, information and, sometimes, disinformation.
Since its opening in January of 2002 as the first community-based
center dedicated to helping children with cancer and their families,
the Time For Life Resource Center has been successfully working
to provide families with a single location to find the latest medical
news and reliable information about a diagnosis of childhood cancer.
With computers, reference materials, and literature, the center
is a relaxing and understanding environment where families can research
materials of their choice and at their leisure.
As a result of this project, families of children with cancer in
the Connecticut and Massachusetts areas have access to the information
and support they need to endure a cancer diagnosis, as well as to
survive the ordeal with their families intact. By making relevant
and factual information available to these children, they are able
to find answers to worrisome questions, consequently reducing anxiety
and improving their quality of life. The Resource Center includes valuable aids such as:
- Books, magazines, Internet access, videos, and one-on-one referrals
and recommendations for children, parents, siblings, and extended
family members
- Seminars and support programs designed to promote successful
management of a cancer diagnosis and to facilitate the integration
of the disease into the life of the child and family members
- Resource check-out for two weeks at a time
- The availability of a copy machine so that valuable pages from
print materials can be copied
- An adjacent open space for meetings and seminars that is equipped
with ample seating and audio/visual equipment
